Trainee Train Driver Recruitment and Assessment Process

Introduction

The role of train driver has long been well regarded and is traditionally highly sought after amongst railway employees and external candidates. When positions become available, very large numbers of applicants come forward, frequently in excess of two thousand. Processing of these becomes a major logistic exercise. This was initially designed for Connex Trains Melbourne, and is described here. It has subsequently been implemented for Veolia Transport New Zealand and in a modified form, for Pacific National for the recruitment of freight train drivers and train controllers. It is currently used by Metro Trains Melbourne to select Trainee Train Drivers.

Overview

Amicus recruit has developed an on-line competency based application/filtering process. Competencies are confirmed after a comprehensive job analysis. The application process begins with self report de-selection questions followed by qualitative and quantitative assessment. Questions are designed in collaboration with the client to reflect current safety/administrative requirements such as educational attainment or driving record etc. The process provides an application list of suitable candidates whose abilities are validated by our online psychometric assessment process and testing during assessment centres.

Groups of candidates are invited to participate in one of a series of full day Assessment Centres, depending on the total number of trainees required.

The Assessment Centre includes further assessments and a behavioural interview.
